What is The Meaning Of Folliculitis?

The noun folliculitis has one meaning:

inflammation of a hair follicle

Folliculitis, is inflammation of one or more hair follicles. The condition may occur anywhere on the skin.

Folliculitis starts when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing, blockage of the follicle, or shaving.

In most cases of folliculitis, the damaged follicles are then infected with the bacteria Staphylococcus (staph).

Barber's itch is a staph infection of the hair follicles in the bearded area of the face, usually the upper lip.

Shaving aggravates the condition.

Tinea barbae is similar to barber's itch, but the infection is caused by a fungus.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a disorder occurring primarily in men of African extraction.

If curly beard hairs are cut too short, they may curve back into the skin and cause inflammation.

Pustules

A pustule is a localized collection of yellow–green fluid containing polymor-phonuclear leucocytes and their breakdown products.

Pustules may appear de novo following neutrophil-mediated inflammation, for example in a bacterial folliculitis.

They may also be caused by gradual polymorphaccumulation in a pre-existing clear vesicle, as occurs in herpesvirus infections.

In this case, an initially clear vesicle becomes cloudy (a transitional stage sometimes called a vesicopustule), and subsequently, the more typical yellow–green colour develops.

The distinction between these two methods of formation is useful in differential diagnosis, but is not always easy to determine unless lesions at different stages are present concurrently or unless individual lesions are observed at intervals.

It can also be difficult to distinguishbetween an early vesicopustule with slightly turbid fluid content due to inflammatory cells and a vesicle with clear fluid content but a damaged over-lying epidermis, as both can be grey in colour.

It is therefore simplest to reserve the term pustule for established lesions with the typical yellow or green colour.

Healing pustules may form a scab or crust in some disorders, notably palmoplantar pustulosis where a brown scale develops as the pustule resolves.

Pustules of the same duration tend to be relatively monomorphic, so the presence of resolving lesions at the same time as fresh pustules implies an ongoing process.

Where pustules appear as crops, they are typical of varicella, in which new vesicles coexist with pustules and with necrotic oldlesions; pustules at several stages of evolution are also typical of chronic dis-orders, such as palmoplantar pustulosis.

The converse is not necessarily true, for example, the lesions of pityrosporum folliculitis tend to be fairly monomorphic irrespective of duration.

Furuncle What Is It?

A boil or furuncle is an infection of a hair follicle. The follicle is the small hole in the skin where a hair is formed. Many people get boils. They grow deep into the skin. Clusters of boils are called carbuncles. Boils are usually found on the face, neck, breasts, armpits, and buttocks.

Skin Abscess

A skin abscess is a collection of pus and infected material in or on the skin.

Skin abscesses are fairly common. They are caused when an infection causes pus and infected material to collect in the skin. Skin abscesses may follow a bacterial infection, commonly an infection with staphylococcus. They can develop after a minor wound, injury, or as a complication of folliculitis or boils. Skin abscesses may occur anywhere on the body. They affect people of all ages.

An abscess can prevent deeper tissues from functioning properly. The infection may spread locally or throughout the body. The spread of infection through the bloodstream may cause severe complications.

Keeping Infections Off The Team

..A recent article in the News-Leader and an alert by the county health department have reported a significant rise in the number of cases of superficial skin infections in relatively healthy people.

....A break in the skin is all it takes for bacteria to gain entry and begin the process of developing an infection. When athletes share towels and equipment or trade jerseys during practice, the bacteria are passed from player to player, making the situation worse.....

...The best method of treating the spread of infections is to reduce the development of the infection in the first place. Proper hygiene is a must...

What Is Homopaths Most Likely Choices for Skin Boils?

The most likely choices are Belladonna or Hepar sulphuris. If the boil has already formed, Mercurius vivus or Silica may be recommended to bring the pus to a head.

Homeopaths maintain that taking the proper homeopathic medication in the first stages of a boil or carbuncle will bring about early resolution of the infection and prevent pus formation.

Inmates Risk New Strains of Infections

This article shows how staphylococcus aureus can be spread....

Mark Stewart is afraid of infecting his fiancee and friends in southern Delaware's network of small, quiet communities.

A 45-year-old convicted drug user, Stewart is a likely carrier of a virulent bacteria called methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, which can lead to infection by flesh-eating bacteria. He believes he contracted MRSA inside prison in Delaware, where he spent six months recently on a probation violation.

In that stay behind bars, Stewart was exposed to bacteria by a cellmate who burst his own untreated boils. Soon after, a spot on Stewart's scalp swelled into a bump. ....

"Mark did have an MRSA infection," Dr. Stephen D. Carey wrote in a letter Stewart said he delivered to Robert I. George, the Sussex Community Corrections Center's warden. "He is likely now to be a carrier of that bacteria. The implications of this to your organization are to be determined by yourselves, however, he is again a carrier of the methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus infection."......

Many herpalists belive skin boils are caused by blood impurities and certain minerals missing from the diet. So, if you are prone to boils to take a look at your diet and take steps to remedy it. Have proper nutrition and eat lots of fresh vegetables. Also drink plenty of water.
